Past Events
2007 ‘Ohana Luau
Hale Makua’s signature fundraising event, the annual ‘Ohana Luau, was a great success again this year. Held in Kihei on August 12, the evening featured a traditional luau feast, music by KAPENA and Kamaka Fernandez, a silent auction and a country store. Emcee Alaka’i (the Morning Goddess) recognized Hale Makua’s 60th anniversary, and Hale Makua staff members participated in a fashion show – complete with nursing costumes from each decade since Hale Makua opened its doors. Thanks to all the Board members, staff members, businesses, and supporters who helped make our 19th annual luau such a successful fundraiser.
Pineapple Grill-Kapalua
2nd Anniversary Gala Event
For the third straight year, Pineapple Grill at Kapalua, a member of the Cohn Restaurant Group, along with hosts Roy and Betty Sakamoto and Mitch Mitchell of Sakamoto Properties, helped to make the Pineapple Grill Third Anniversary gala event benefiting Hale Makua a tremendous success. This year’s event, held on June 14, raised $48,150 for the non-profit organization.
Proceeds from this event are being used to fund the Luana Project, an effort where Hale Makua is currently striving to move away from a medical/institutional model of care to one that is more homelike. The name of this project is Luana, which means living in comfort. One of the major goals of this project is to create a community where life revolves around close and continuing contact with plants, animals, and children. It is these relationships that provide the young and old alike with a pathway to a life worth living.
