Volunteer Opportunities
Hale Makua loves our volunteers! Through their enthusiasm, vitality, and the multitude of tasks they complete, they help to extend the scope of Hale Makua’s programs and services. The philosophy of Hale Makua volunteers is based on the sharing of oneself through interaction with residents, families, and our professional staff. Volunteers bring a great awareness of Hale Makua and our purpose to the community. We have an active Volunteer Auxiliary program run by an Auxiliary Board that meets each month at the Kahului facility.
Volunteers can choose from many things to do such as:
- Being a friend
- Friendly visiting
- Helping with arts and crafts
- Leading discussion groups
- Leading arts and crafts workshops
- Writing letters
- Singing songs
- Reading aloud
- Playing table games
- Assisting with gift making
- Assisting with holiday decorations
- Showing movies/slides
- Crocheting or sewing for residents
- Flower arranging
- Helping serve meals in the dining room
- Transporting residents to activities and therapy
- Light computer input
- Office filing/typing
- And much more!!!
Here’s what some of our current Auxiliary members have to say about volunteering at Hale Makua:
Cliff Tokumaru:
Precious few things that I do in my life just simply seem to be “right,” and worthwhile, and meaningful. Helping residents at Hale Makua is one of those things. This is why I am a volunteer at Hale Makua.
Sadae Uyeno:
I feel satisfied when I can help staff members who have many responsibilities. It makes me feel good to help. My biggest satisfaction is when I help with interpreting for our Japanese-speaking residents. The response I get from residents who are normally very quiet makes me feel good.
Dorothy Romson:
If I stayed home I would go nuts. I love being with people and Hale Makua is a great place to be.
Alice Bourke:
The biggest thing for me is giving compassion to the residents and feeling warmth inside. I know both residents and their families appreciate me.
Dolores MacDonald:
Coming to Hale Makua is important for my health and it makes me feel good. If I feel pain I get comforted caring for the residents and always feel better.
